What to expect & FAQs

Below is what you can expect in your first few sessions in an art-therapy based practice with Mamie. It can be nerve-racking embarking into new territory, so it can be helpful to have a little information about what to expect prior to your first session. Scroll down to also read Frequently Asked Questions and a glossary of commonly used words in Mamie’s workshops and practice. Please do not hesitate to reach out with further questions!

First 3 Sessions

  • In your first session, what is known as an intake session, you will be provided time and space to speak your truth and tell your story. Mamie will actively listen to what brings you to therapy and what your hopes are for collaborating with her. You will be able to ask questions of Mamie and how she will be able to help you reach your goals.

  • During session two, Mamie will guide you into a creative process to further understand your goals, worldview, and set the stage for your collaborative work.

  • Based on your first two sessions, you and Mamie will then move into what a typical session will look like, which is meeting your needs in regards to processing stressors and symptoms while also likely engaging in art-making and creative process. Most sessions will include both talking and art-making, while some sessions may have more talking and others may have more quiet, art making. All is decided collaboratively between you and Mamie to best meet your needs.

  • In many workshops and groups and sometimes within therapy sessions, Mamie uses both Oracle and Tarot to help clients tap into their intuition. Oracle cards are like Tarot cards, however, Tarot card decks will always have the same 78 cards and those 78 cards have more specific meanings, whereas Oracle card decks are unique to the creator.

You may notice me using these words in sessions or in marketing for workshops or retreats. These words often have varying meanings to different people, and are often more felt experiences than can be encapsulated into words. But I will try, and then I invite you to experience them for yourself!
